Glasgow University Statement on Open Access 2006

Glasgow University, as a signatory of the Scottish Open Access Declaration, strongly encourages authors at Glasgow University to deposit copies of their published work into the University's Institutional Repository at http://www.gla.ac.uk/enlighten.

The University's Institutional Repository, developed by the DAEDALUS Project, is proving to be an excellent mechanism for staff to make their publications as widely available as possible. The Repository is a freely available database which anyone in the world can access and is intended to be a showcase of the research undertaken at the University. Papers held in the repository are highly visible, and are being discovered via search engines such as Google, Google Scholar, Yahoo and Scirus.

Usage statistics for papers available in the repository show a high level of use. There have been over 130,000 downloads of published and peer-reviewed papers currently deposited in the repository. The most popular paper has been downloaded over 5000 times, and the top 100 papers have all been downloaded over 250 times each. This demonstrates that increased visibility of papers leads to greater access and this in turn leads to increased impact. Deposit in the repository is therefore of great benefit to staff.

Some of the major UK funding bodies have, or are considering, policies on Open Access which may require the deposit of copies of publications arising from research that they fund into an institutional repository or other openly available database.

The Institutional Repository could provide freely available access to the papers submitted to the next RAE and authors are urged to submit papers that may form part of that submission as early as possible.

Many publishers will allow deposit of papers into institutional repositories although, in most cases, this may have to be the author's final version rather than the actual publisher PDF file. Repository staff will check publisher copyright policies to ensure that publications can be added to the repository.

The deposit process is simple, and only requires staff to provide a suitable electronic copy of their publications. The repository website includes full details about the submission process, advice about copyright and contact details for repository staff, who are available to answer questions, assist authors with submitting papers and to brief staff about the service and about Open Access issues generally.
