BBSRC or NERC or STFC: how to comply
If you are the PI on a project funded by the BBSRC or NERC or STFC first check to see if your publication is covered by the policy via the summary of policies. If so, you should then go through the relevant steps in this list before you submit an article to a journal. If you need help with finding any of the information below University repository staff can help you – e-mail then at deposit@lib.gla.ac.uk.
- Check if the publisher permits deposit of your
own final version of
articles in an institutional repository such as
Enlighten, Glasgow
University’s institutional repository. You can do this by checking the
SHERPA-RoMEO database of publisher
policies, by checking with repository staff in the University Library, or
by asking your publisher. Note that some publishers require an embargo period
before papers may be deposited in institutional repositories.
- If so, send your own final version of your article to deposit@lib.gla.ac.uk
in either Word or PDF format (Word files will be converted to
PDF). Illustrations etc. can be sent as a separate file if necessary.
Repository staff in the Library will deposit the article in Enlighten on your
behalf once the article is published. You need do nothing further.
- If the publisher does not permit deposit in an institutional
repository, check if instead they permit deposit of your own final version of
your article in a subject repository such as UK PubMed Central within 6
months of publication. If this is permitted, go to
https://ukmss.mimas.ac.uk/ once your paper has been published to deposit
your paper in UKPMC. Note that some publishers require an embargo period
before papers may be deposited in UKPMC. Information on the deposit process is
available at
https://ukmss.mimas.ac.uk/ukmss/local/UserGuide/UKMSS_UserGuide.html.
Alternatively, repository staff in the University Library can carry out
deposit in your behalf. Contact them at deposit@lib.gla.ac.uk if you want to
choose this option.
- If the publisher does not permit you to deposit any version of your paper
in either an institutional or a subject repository, check if they have a paid
OA option (e.g.
Blackwell
Online Open,
Springer Open Choice,
Elsevier Agreement). However, note that BBSRC, NERC and STFC do not
provide funds for this. Further information on
payment of publication fees is available from the Research Information
Network.
- If the publisher has no paid OA option, and does not permit deposit of any version of articles in either an institutional repository such as Enlighten or a subject repository such as UKPMC, contact BBSRC, NERC or STFC or consider publishing in a different journal.
NB – if you are being funded by both BBSRC or NERC or STFC AND another funder such as the Wellcome Trust, Arthritis Research Campaign, Cancer Research UK, the Medical Research Council or the British Heart Foundation, you should follow the guidelines for these funders, as they have more specific requirements. The BBSRC/NERC/STFC requirements will be met by following the requirements of these funders, but the opposite is not true.
