Overview of DAEDALUS

The Vision

DAEDALUS will establish a range of Open Digital Collections which will enable members of the University of Glasgow (and beyond) to deposit and access our scholarly output such as published and peer reviewed academic papers, pre-prints and e-theses.

Why OAI Digital Collections?

These digital collections implement the Open Archives Initiative's protocol for harvesting metadata (OAI-PMH). This protocol will ensure that our collections can be searched by specialised search services such as OAIster from the University of Michigan. These collections will provide free and unrestricted access to their content.

Project Deliverables

The deliverables of this project will be:

  1. A range of Open Digital Collections which will include:
    • Published and peer reviewed academic papers
    • Pre-prints and grey literature
    • Theses
    • Research resource finding aids
  2. A local search service to search across these collections
  3. A program of studies, workshops and reports which chart the issues and challenges of the project and provides exemplars of best practice

The opportunity to unlock access these digital collections, including publicly available policy and business documents through the Open Archives Initiative will provide a wealth of information which hitherto could not be effectively exploited [since it could not be accessed] to underpin teaching and research.

Software

DAEDALUS will use a range of software to develop these Open Digital collections including:

  • eprints.org [University of Southampton]
  • ETD-db [e-theses software from Virginia Tech]
