Scottish Theatre Archive

The Scottish Theatre Archive was awarded a grant of £71,600 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to enhance its web-based, on-line public catalogue which went live in January 2000. The Friends of Glasgow University Library also contributed £6000 over three years in partnership funding.

The Archive (STA for short) performs a major role preserving Scotland's theatrical heritage by providing a safe home for archival material and by making it accessible to all those interested in Scottish theatre. While the STA is widely acknowledged as the natural focus for collecting in the performing arts for the whole of Scotland, it is especially strong in holdings relating to Glasgow and the West of Scotland.

The project was conceived with the following objectives in mind:

  • opening up access to the rich theatrical heritage of Scotland
  • cataloguing major uncatalogued collections by adding entries to our existing electronic database
  • delivery of this data our via website to as wide an audience as possible
  • providing the necessary documentary descriptive base on which to build a digital programme to add photographs of productions, playbills, etc.
