Digital Library Assistant Project

Glasgow University Library installed a new Open Access Short Loan facility in the Summer of 2002. This was possible through the installation of the digital identification system (DIDS) provided by 3M. The facility holds c.70, 000 items within a secure environment with 2 Self-Check units.

General housekeeping of the facility is dependent on the use of two 3M Digital Library Assistants (DLA). This project monitored the performance of the DLA's over a 28 week period beginning on the 18th November 2002.

We also measured the the quality of the service provided by this new facility in the following ways:

  • Measuring the time taken for items to be reshelved - by sampling
  • Measuring the queue time/ throughput at the self-service checkouts - by sampling
  • Investigating user opinion re. the availability and accessibility of material - by survey
  • Library staff feedback on use and performance of DLA - by survey/focus group
